Jon-Michael McClinton, Principal.
Twenty years spanning IT business analysis, product management, and human-centered design — arriving at design systems architecture from the inside of the systems themselves, not from a design-school entry point.
Two decades. One practice.
Twenty years in technology and digital product delivery, across telecommunications, ecommerce, financial services, healthcare, aerospace, insurance, and manufacturing — grounded in human-centered design and systems thinking. That experience, in its totality, is what led to founding McClinton Design & Strategy.
Context, not control.
The job isn't to make every decision — it's to build the structure that lets other teams make good decisions without needing to ask. IA hierarchies, cross-channel service blueprints, design systems governance, and requirements documentation exist for the same reason: so a system stays coherent after the engagement ends, not just while it's actively being watched.
Every engagement is grounded in sourced evidence rather than assumption — real usage data over industry defaults, documented rationale over "it felt right." That rigor is also what makes governance defensible when a vendor or a team pushes back: the standard is whether a document is detailed enough for someone else to approve real risk on it.
AI-native, by necessity, not trend.
Design governance now extends past static screens into AI-driven experiences — agentic workflow blueprinting is treated as a natural extension of the same discipline used for deterministic systems, not a separate specialty bolted on afterward. The practice also maintains a working methods-and-procedures knowledge base, so every engagement runs from a documented, repeatable process rather than being reconstructed from scratch each time.
